EXCLUSIVE : Court Dismisses Abu Trica’s Emergency Bid to Stop U.S. Extradition

The legal battle surrounding Ghanaian socialite Frederick Kumi, popularly known as Abu Trica, has taken another dramatic turn after the High Court in Accra dismissed an emergency application seeking to halt his extradition to the United States.
The ruling marks a significant moment in the ongoing proceedings, as Abu Trica’s legal team had hoped to temporarily suspend the execution of the extradition order while pursuing additional legal remedies. However, the court declined the request, allowing the extradition process to continue for now.
The latest development was first disclosed on Monday, July 6, 2026, by media personality and lawyer Serwaa Amihere, who shared news of the court’s decision.
Despite the setback, Abu Trica’s lawyers remain resolute in their efforts to challenge the extradition. His lead counsel, Oliver Barker-Vormawor, revealed that the court has agreed to expedite the hearing of a separate motion seeking a stay of the extradition order.
In a statement posted on his Facebook page, Barker-Vormawor announced that the High Court had directed both parties to appear before it on July 10, 2026, for arguments on the motion.
“The High Court has just made an order bringing forward the date for hearing of motion to stay the extradition of Abu Trica. Both parties must appear on 10 July,” he wrote.
The emergency application followed an extradition order granted by the High Court on July 2, 2026. Abu Trica’s legal team subsequently filed the application in an attempt to prevent the immediate enforcement of that order, arguing that the extradition should be paused pending the determination of further legal processes.
Although that request has now been dismissed, the court’s decision to fast-track the hearing of the motion to stay offers the defence another opportunity to present its case before any final steps toward extradition are taken.
Attention now shifts to July 10, when the High Court is expected to hear arguments from both sides. The outcome of that hearing could prove pivotal in determining whether Abu Trica’s extradition to the United States proceeds immediately or is temporarily put on hold as the legal contest continues.
