Best Ghana Gospel Songs: Award-Winning Classics (2026)
Ghanaian gospel is the one genre that has repeatedly beaten hiplife, afrobeats and highlife to the biggest prize in the country’s music. Joe Mettle did it in 2017, when he became the first gospel artist named Artiste of the Year at the Ghana Music Awards. Diana Hamilton did it again in 2021 with “Adom”. These are the songs, old and new, that define the sound. Most are sung in Twi; all of them are built for church, for the car and for the long drive home.

1. Diana Hamilton — “Adom” (2021)
The song that swept the 2021 Ghana Music Awards: Artiste of the Year, Best Gospel Artiste, Best Gospel Song and Most Popular Song of the Year in one night. Diana Hamilton, a nurse by profession who started out as a backing vocalist at 13, had already won Gospel Artiste of the Year in 2020, and in May 2026 she was named Best Gospel Artiste again. “Adom” (Grace) is the modern Ghana gospel anthem. 2. Joe Mettle — “Mehia wo Yesu”
Joe Mettle rewrote what a gospel career could look like in Ghana. In 2017 he won Artiste of the Year, Gospel Artiste of the Year and Male Vocalist of the Year at the VGMAs, the first gospel act ever to take the top award, and in 2025 he won Best Gospel Artiste and Best Male Vocalist again at the Telecel Ghana Music Awards. “Mehia wo Yesu” (I Need You Jesus) is his signature worship song; “Nhyira”, “Mensuro” and “Ɔnwanwani” (God of Wonders) are the others to know.

3. Nacee — “Aseda” (2024 Best Gospel Song)
Nacee’s “Aseda” (Thanksgiving) won Best Gospel Song at the 2024 Ghana Music Awards, where he was also named Best Gospel Artiste of the Year. A producer as well as a singer, Nacee makes the polished, radio-ready side of Ghana gospel.

4. Piesie Esther — “Wayɛ Me Yie” and “Nyame Ye”
Piesie Esther has been performing since 2002 and released five studio albums between 2002 and 2017, but her biggest years came late. “Wayɛ Me Yie” took Gospel Artiste of the Year and Best Gospel Song at the 2023 VGMAs, and “Nyame Ye” won Best Traditional Gospel Song at the May 2026 Ghana Music Awards, where it was also nominated for Most Popular Song of the Year alongside Black Sherif and Medikal.

5. Empress Gifty — “Watch Me” (2025 Best Traditional Gospel Song)
Winner of Best Traditional Gospel Song at the 2025 Ghana Music Awards. Traditional gospel is where Ghana’s church-choir roots meet highlife rhythm, and “Watch Me” is a good introduction to it.

6. Obaapa Christy — “Me Te Ase” (2002) and “Hyebre Sesafo” (2005)
Often called the queen of Ghana gospel, Obaapa Christy won Gospel Artist of the Year, Best Female Vocal Performance and Best Collaboration at the 2007 Ghana Music Awards, and received a national honour from President Kufuor in 2008. “Me Te Ase” (her 2002 debut) and “Hyebre Sesafo” (2005) are the classics; “Wa Ye Wie” with Kuami Eugene (2020) brought her to a new generation.

7. Daughters of Glorious Jesus — “Aseda” (2003)
Ghana’s best-known gospel group, formed in 1989 out of a church choir in Kumasi, singing three-part harmony over highlife. Their 2003 album Aseda is their most successful, and in 2004 they became the first gospel act to win one of the three top Ghana Music Awards. By 2020 they had released 12 albums.

The May 2026 Ghana Music Awards gospel shortlists are the best guide to who is rising right now. Best Traditional Gospel Song nominees alongside Piesie Esther were Joyce Blessing (“Correct”), Celestine Donkor (“Akorfala”), Kofi Owusu Peprah (“M’aseda”), Mabel Okyere (“So Far So Good”) and Paul Enana (“Baba God (Matthew 6:26)”). Best Gospel Artiste nominees alongside Diana Hamilton were Mabel Okyere, Kofi Owusu Peprah, Piesie Esther, Nana Yaw Ofori-Atta and MOG Music.
