- Highlife — the oldest and most recognisably Ghanaian sound, built on bright guitar lines and horns. It remains the country’s biggest musical export. - Hiplife — coined in the late 1990s by Reggie Rockstone, who fused American hip-hop with highlife rhythms such as Jama and Kpanlogo, and proved that rapping in Twi rather than English could carry a hit.
- Afrobeats — the pan-African pop sound Ghana shares with Nigeria, and the lane most international playlists pull from. KOJOBLAK’s “Excellent”, featuring Kelvyn Boy, won Best Afrobeats Song in 2026.
- Asakaa — Ghanaian drill, born in Kumasi and shaped by the drill sound Pop Smoke popularised. It is the youngest and rawest of the five.

What is the difference between Afrobeats and highlife?
Highlife is the older, guitar-and-horn-led Ghanaian tradition that dates back to the early twentieth century. Afrobeats is the modern pan-African pop sound, built on programmed drums and shared across Ghana and Nigeria. Many Ghanaian hits borrow from both at once, which is why the line between them often blurs on this chart.
Is Ghanaian music the same as Nigerian music?
No, although they overlap heavily and artists from both countries collaborate constantly. Nigerian songs chart in Ghana every month; we deliberately leave them off this list so it stays a Ghanaian chart. Ghana’s distinct contributions are highlife, hiplife and asakaa, none of which originated in Nigeria.
